Four Things to Consider When Downsizing to a Condo

Condo living is a great alternative for anyone looking to downsize. Perhaps your children have moved out, or maybe you want to travel the world (or both!), and feel that your home is just too much maintenance. Some people downsize to a condo after selling their residential home, but how do you know if it's the right decision for you? The following are a handful of things to consider if you've thought about adopting the condo-lifestyle.

1. Amenities: One big advantage of living in a condomunium complex is the on-site amenities offered by the building. Common ones include a 24/7 doorman, swimming pool, gym, rooftop deck, and community garden. Just remember, the more amenities a building offers, the steeper the monthly condo fee will be.

2. Condo Boards: Similar to a neighborhood association, condo buildings have boards comprised of community members. These boards help allocate funds, keep occupants updated on meeting minutes, and maintain common areas. This can be a great way to get involved and meet some of your neighbors!

3. Time to Declutter: Downsizing means you'll likely need to get rid of some furniture and decor that simply won't fit in your new home. Will you donate your items? Set up a garage sale? Hire an estate sale company? Whatever you decide, it provides a great opportunity to look through old items and get rid of things you no longer need.

4. Pet Policy: Will you be taking a furry-friend with you to your new condo? Make sure you're up-to-date on the building's pet policy - many buildings have certain breed or weight restrictions, and a few don't allow animals at all. It's also important to note whether a condo has any designated play or restroom areas for pets.

Moving can be an exciting, albeit stressful, experience. However, speak with almost anyone who has made the switch to a condo, and I'm sure they'll tell you they'd do it over again in a heartbeat - the proximity to restaurants and shops, on-site amenities, and sense of community simply can't be beat!
